The Federal Government will continue to partner with the media in efforts to enhance the country’s democracy, Mr John Odey, Minister of Information and Communications, said yesterday in Abuja.
In a message to mark this year’s World Press Freedom Day, Odey pledged that the government will create a conducive environment for the press to disseminate unbiased information. Odey’s message was delivered on his behalf by his Special Assistant (Media), Mr Rotimi Ajayi. He said that government would continue to aid the media to work with the best innovative technology "that would enhance a free flow of information on government policies and programmes. "The Nigerian press has been at the vanguard of the struggle for development in the history of the country, especially the crucial role it plays in the enthronement of democracy. "It is commendable that in spite of the daunting challenges in the course of playing its constitutional roles in our country, the Nigerian press has remained steadfast," he said. The minister said that "the press is a crucial stakeholder in our collective drive to attain greatness and to make life more abundant for our people." the World Press Freedom Day is a day designated by the UN to raise global awareness on the importance of the freedom of the press.
