The Federal Executive Council will now be meeting weekly and not fortnightly as earlier directed by President Umaru Yar’Adua, a senior government official told Sunday Trust.
The council of ministers had been meeting every other Wednesday since Yar’Adua inaugurated his cabinet last year. This was a departure from the former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s cabinet which used to meet weekly. The reason given by Yar’Adua for the fortnightly meeting was to give cabinet members enough chance to scrutinise memos ahead of the FEC meeting. But last week, a circular from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babagana Kingibe said that henceforth the council would meet weekly so as to fasten government business. The circular said because of the late passage of the 2008 budget, there was need to have more frequent council meetings so that memos related to executing the budget are considered with dispatch. Sunday Trust could not obtain comments from Information Minister John Odey because his phone was not available throughout yesterday when our reporter tried to call. His minister of state Ibrahim Nakande’s phone was also unavailable. Text messages sent to their phones were not replied up to the time of going to press last night. But a top government official told Sunday Trust that the FEC would meet this Wednesday, exactly a week after the last meeting. Views: 1348
