Page 1 of 2 Former Military President Ibrahim Babangida said on Friday that Nigeria had not been structured to reflect true federalism. Babangida said during a condolence visit to the family of the late Afenifere leader, Chief Abraham Adesanya. He regretted that in spite of the efforts of people such as Adesanya, Nigeria has not been able to achieve true federalism in line with the aspirations of its founding fathers.
However, he said there was now a foundation for a true federal structure with the successful civilian-to-civilian transition last year and the National Assembly’s commitment to the review of the 1999 constitution. He described Adesanya as a true democrat and a champion of the Yoruba race who played a major role in the struggle to end military rule in the country. "Abraham was a committed democrat, who stood firm and unshaken in matters of his convictions. The role played by him in re-awakening the Yoruba people has generated awareness and discourse in the polity. "Only history will gauge the role played by Pa Abraham in bringing about the end of military rule in our country and ushering in the era of multi-party representative democracy," Babangida said. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the former President was accompanied by a former AD presidential candidate, Chief Olu Falae and some PDP chieftains. Views: 1617
