The Kano Zonal Programme Manager of FHI/GHAIN, Muhammed Tijjani, has said that over 300,000 persons are living with HIV/AIDS in Kano. , saying currently GHAIN gives free treatment to 6,000 patients, while over 80,000 patients benefited from GHAIN.
Tijjani told Sunday Trust after the HIV/AIDS Operational Task Team meeting on Friday in Kano that these figures were from a survey carried out in 2005. Also speaking to our correspondent on the same issue, Kano State commissioner for Health, Hajiya Aisha Kiru, said that given the efforts of the present administration, the rate of the pandemic is reducing in the state. Kiru said the percentage of people living with HIV/AIDS has dropped from 5 percent to 3.5 percent this year, adding that when Kano State Action Committee on AIDS becomes fully operational, the prevalence of the scourge in the state will reduce.
