Worried by the rising unemployment among youths, Gwale Local Government Council in Kano State has trained 300 youths in various vocational skills ranging from computer, metalwork, carpentry, among others.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the council’s new secretariat, the chairman of the council, Alhaji Abbas Sani Abbas, said that his council borrowed a leaf from Governor Shekarau’s human development programme.

He stated that it is one of the cardinal principles of his administration to empower people and make them self-reliant, noting that since start-up capital has constituted an impediment to them, they came up with the programme to help the youths.

Honorable Abbas noted that N2million was spent issued as start-up capital for 100 youth, while N4million was spent on the 300 youths who received training, adding that the empowerment programme is continuous and it is to be organized three times on a yearly basis.

"We are ready to train and give start up capital to our teeming youths and those not opportune to participate in the batch should be ready for the next batch," the chairman said.

While imploring the beneficiaries to justify their business packages, he also said that since his assumption into office, the council had come up with so many programmes aimed at ensuring the general welfare of the people.

On his part, Chiroman Kano, Alhaji Lamido Ado Bayero, thanked the local government for creating empowerment programmes for the youth, saying the gesture will surely reduce unemployment to the barest minimum.
