A middle aged man Malam Zakari Abdulrashid has been arraigned before the chief magistrate court Gidan Muartala Kano for maltreating and neglecting his child, contrary to section 238 of the penal code.

Police first information report read in the court revealed that one Malama Sadika reported that since 2007 her husband had abandoned her and her child without paying the N6,000 monthly feeding cost agreed by both parties before the court.

She said instead he persistently disturbed and mal-treated the child despite failing to carter for his needs and therefore asked the court to force him to take up his responsibilities as a father.

The police prosecution Sergeant Sabo Idris who read the FIR added that the actions of the accused contravened section 238 of the penal code.

During cross examination the accused pleaded guilty to all the charges but argued that his inability to pay the monthly feeding allowance was not intentional, he then promised to pay the amount as and when due.

The chief magistrate Maryam Ahmed Sabo then ordered his release on bail with a surety of N20.000. He is to also sign a bond not to disturb his former wife or her children again and to also be of good behaviour.
