The West African Examinations Council
(WAEC), has cancelled its English
Language Paper One (Essay) of the ongoing May/June West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) which was scheduled to hold yesterday.

At a news conference in Lagos, the Head of the National Office of the council (HNO), Dr Iyi Uwadiae, said the paper would be taken on May 14.

Uwadiae said that Nigerian Languages examination earlier scheduled to take place on May 14 has been shifted to May 20.

The HNO said the cancellation was because of an alleged armed robbery attack on one of the council’s staff while conveying security materials relevant to the conduct of the examination.

He said the incident made WAEC to doubt the integrity of the English Language Paper One due to be administered.

Uwadiae said the council expressed regret over the inconvenience the cancellation would cause candidates and their parents.

The HNO said it was the culture of the council to discard any version of a test paper once its safety and integrity could not be guaranteed.

He assured that top management officers of the council will be involved in the inspection of the WASSCE examination nationwide.

He said that the council would continue to uphold its integrity, adding that it would not relent in contributing to education development in Nigeria. (NAN)
