Mr. Godwin Elumelu, Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Power and Steel, says he is being inundated with life threatening text messages on a daily basis. Elumelu disclosed this on Wednesday while addressing newsmen in Makurdi.
He said the development was not unconnected with his Committee’s position on the non execution of the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP). He said "No day passes by without at least three text messages warning me to withdraw from the probe of the power sector." NAN reports that some of the text messages read, "you are doing a wonderful job but do you think it’s worth it? Leave it or you shall die." He said another read thus, "Hon, consider the implications of the action of the Committee you are heading." "I am inundaunted by these text messages. As an elected representative of the people, I am defending the mandate through the repositioning of the power sector,’’ Elumelu said. He explained that from the committee’s findings during its ongoing inspection of NIPP, "the unexecuted projects across the country are a total rape of the Nigeria people. "The Committee will take its oversight functions on power very seriously. If doing my job for the betterment of the Nigerian state means putting my life on the line, then so be it," Elumelu said. On the measures to be taken against companies and contractors who have failed to execute their projects, Elumelu said the National Assembly and the executive arm of government were working towards that end.
