Gov. Murtala Nyako Adamawa State’s new governor, retired Admiral Murtala Hammanyero Nyako, took the oath of office yesterday with a pledge to meet the expectations of the people of the state.
Nyako and his deputy, Bala James Ngillari, were sworn in by the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Bemare Bansi, in Yola at a colourful ceremony attended by top government officials, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders and thousands of its supporters. Delivering his speech immediately after taking the oath, Governor Nyako said: "I pledge to do my utmost to meet people’s expectations. God willing, you will not be disappointed". He said the nullification of his election had briefly interrupted the progress of his programmes for the state, stressing however that his return guarantees the resumption of the programmes. He called on the leaders of other political parties to cooperate with him and begin a new dawn in the state. "Adamawa State belongs to all of us… We cannot afford to leave political differences, group interests or personal ambitions" to block the development of the state. "Let me remind all of us that the election is now over. Let us put the anxiety of the past few weeks behind us and face the challenges of developing of our state…It is a new dawn," he said. Nyako, however, hit at his main opponents, accusing their administration of corruption and incompetence. "The landslide nature of our victory at the poll is a clear indication that voters have got our message and rejected religious, ethnic and other retrogressive primordial politics. "Let me at this juncture express how deeply I appreciate the enormity of the responsibility put on my shoulders and my colleagues for this unprecedented popular support", he said. Nyako was declared winner of last Saturday’s governorship re-run election in the state by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saying his party had won in all the 21 local government areas of the state. His main rival, Alhaji Ibrahim Bapetel of the Action Congress (AC), however, rejected the result as fraudulent and "alien" to the political and heterogeneous nature of the state. The AC on its part alleged that the Adamawa’s governorship seat was auctioned by INEC to the highest bidder. It promised to publish the full details of its own results. At yesterday’s ceremony, Nyako officially took over from former Acting Governor, James Barka, who held the office for two months. Views: 1421
