Tragedy struck in Onitsha as a couple and their little daughter drowned at the Ose Okwodu end of the River Niger. The couple, Mr and Mrs Josephat Chijioke and their daughter, Amarachukwu, were said to have fallen into the river in their Mercedes 230 car.

An eye witness said the incident occurred after the family had done their shopping at the Onitsha main market and were about driving home.

The eyewitness told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). in Onitsha yesterday that Chijioke had parked his car close to the river bank before going for shopping.

When he returned with his family, instead of moving forward out of the park, he went on reverse, knocking down a dwarf wall and other barricades, before plunging into the river.

A rescue team has been able to recover the bodies of Chijioke and his daughter.

The vehicle was also recovered while searching was intensified for the wife, who was said to be pregnant.

Meanwhile, the police in Onitsha has confirmed the incident, saying that efforts were being made to decongest the motor park.

He said that the command would possibly stop further use of the space as motor park, to check a recurrence of such incident. He reiterated the need for motorists in the state to be conscious while driving to avert such a situation.

Late Chijioke lived at No. 8, Obi Lane, Onitsha and hailed from Ngbagbuowa in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
