The Nigeria Police Force is to review all the abandoned case files in police stations that are in the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory Abuja.

The Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro, disclosed this yesterday while inaugurating the Special Monitoring Team on the Supervision of Divisional Crime Branches throughout the country at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Mr Okiro told the monitoring team that when you go to the police stations, you should look at the record of the cases filed.

Look at the one that is closed and close them, the one that is not properly handled by the IPOs, you treat to ensure speedy justice dispensation."

He lamented the way abandoned case files filled police stations and other crime and investigative branches in the country which causes delay in prosecution.

"Its common knowledge and a sad one, that all our police crime branches and other investigative branches are littered with abandoned case files," he added

The IGP said, "Investigation cases is being duplicated unnecessarily by the investigation officers from the divisions up to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), which reveals the neglect of the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) of the Force Order 94 on the destruction of case files and records, albeit, the Force Standing Orders on the supervision and vetting of case files."

He said these sad attitudes cause delay in the prosecution of offenders and makes the force not to understand the cases that were closed and some of the cases were abandoned unnecessarily.

I must appluad mR. Okiro with professional
accumen in dealing with Police assignments.
Thus, Mr. Okiro is acute with the Police do
and don'ts and police regulations despite our political distractions. Mr. Okiro is not
ashamed nor afraid to tackle the criminal
elements routinely infilterating the police
force. He has been purging the police force
to install pride and dignity in the force
upon history would soon bear witness. He has
admitted publicly the inherited mess in the
force with acute changes without slowing
down. The man is trying and in my humble
opinion, he might help install confidence
of the People on Nigerian Police force.
