Residents and authorities of the Bwari Area Council in the FCT, observed the scheduled monthly sanitation exercise for the month of April, 2008 at the weekend Residents of the area council came out in their hundreds on Saturday morning to clean up their surroundings. The chairman of the Bwari Area Council sanitation, Suleiman Yunusa, told City News that he was happy with the turnout of people for the exercise. ‘As you can see, people have responded to our call and that is why they have come out on mass to participate in the sanitation exercise as scheduled to hold at the end of every month,’ said Honorable Yunusa He disclosed that the Saturday’s event was the third to be observed by the area council since the exercise was flagged-off in December last year. Honorable Yunusa disclosed that although a mobile court was constituted to prosecute sanitation defaulters, the court has not prosecuted anybody since its conception. ‘It is as a result of high level of awareness of sanitation laws among the people’ he added. He said the council has embarked on what he called ‘massive awareness creation’ through the media, both print and electronic in addition to messages in mosques and churches. The residents were seen busy cleaning their environments, packing the waste into designated refuse disposal vans and dump places. ‘I am happy about this development because it is good to be conscious of our environment and make it clean as they say cleanliness is next to Godliness,’ said Mr. Moses Isa, a resident who was seen busy cleaning the front of his house. Police and Civil Defence officers were seen busy patrolling the area council through out the period of the sanitation. The three hour exercise which started at about 7am ended at 10 am. It will be recalled that the chairman of the Area Council, Honorable Isa Dara, flagged off the monthly sanitation exercise in December last year and since then, it has been observed every last Saturday of the month.
