Segun Obe: Disobeying all the rules Print E-mail

For the past year, Segun Obe has been in the studios -working with some of Nigeria’s best production talents, especially obhams Asuquo and Rymzo. He has been away from the shows, he has been away from the performances, but he has been working hard and strong. Born Samuel Olusegun Adepelehinde Obe, he is, among other things, a voice trainer. He goes beyond R&B and Soul, as he dabbles into Rock, too. "In my album, I am trying to talk about love, marriage, and other aspects of life," he said. "It’s certainly not the kind of release that you will listen to once and will not play again."

Of course, the whole nation knows what Segun Obe represents. Stubbornly sticking with gospel in the face of many others who have abandoned the genre, the talented Mr. Obe has made it his life’s work to bring gospel music into the mainstream, and to continually make it more appealing to the mainstream markets.

After months working and sweating it out, Segun is out again - and this time, it’s Segun like you’ve never seen him before. A sneak preview given to Weekend Magazine revealed some amazingly well-layered tracks, dotted with all-star guest turns by some of the biggest, brightest Nigerian music stars. "I’m pumping up the commercial value - and the beats that are coming are hits for the clubs, concerts and parties," he told Weekend Magazine.

Obe said he announced his return by releasing into the market his new single, ‘Plenty Celebrations’ - one that features the artiste-of-the-moment, 9ice, whose prominent collaboration on this single is compelling. 9ice oozes talent, and he compliments Segun perfectly. The song is already enjoying heavy rotation in Cool FM, Rhythm FM, Unity FM, Metro FM and indeed with all the major Lagos radio and disc jockeys.

"More singles are coming out, once the first one has made the rounds," Obe said, adding: "Next up is ‘Kinimolese’ and ‘No Time’, both produced by Rymzo." But that is only half of the news. Even better, Obe is doing something he hasn’t done before in his ten-year career in music: re-launching his brand and album in a major way.

In June, collaborating with RedSTRAT, he will be dragging along heavyweights and the brightest stars from the music industry for major events, performances, music and dance, including guest spots from fellow artistes in the industry.

"I’ll be branching into acting quite soon," he told Weekend Magazine. "But I feel that I shouldn’t be a jack of all trades, mastering none. I should focus on one thing at a time."

If what’s been seen so far is anything to go by, his upcoming album is going to grab the nation’s attention. "This is Segun Obe reloaded," he told Weekend Magazine. "Get ready."
