The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called for the organization of West African traditional rulers’ conference to proffer the needed solutions to the various conflicts in the sub region.

He made the call yesterday when the ECOWAS Executive Secretary, Muhammad bn Chambas, paid him a visit at his palace in Sokoto.

According to the Sultan, traditional rulers in the sub region played a significant role in solving conflicts and crisis within their domains and could help in finding lasting panacea to the problems in the sub region.

The Sultan who commended the ECOWAS for the good work it has been doing, noted the free movement of goods and people among the ECOWAS member nations had been the major challenge of the commission.

He expressed appreciation to Muhammad bn Chambas for the visit and assured of his support and cooperation at all times.

ECOWAS Executive Secretary Muhammad bn Chambas had earlier expressed the commission’s readiness to partner with the Sultan of Sokoto, particularly in the area of peace and security in the sub region.

He expressed concern that recently the West African sub region became known for instability and conflicts, citing Liberia, Guinea Bissau, Cote d’voire among others as example.

The ECOWAS boss said he was at the palace to express appreciation to the Sultan for the work he had been doing, especially in fostering peaceful coexistence among the people.
