The Hausa community in Lagos has urged Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola to appoint a northerner as commissioner in the state.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Daily Trust in Lagos yesterday, the Chairman of the chieftaincy council among the Hausa community in Agege, Lagos, Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi, who spoke on behalf of the Sarkin Hausawa in Agege, Alhaji Musa Muhammed Dogon Kadai, said the state government should be fair to northerners in Lagos by appointing one of them commissioner. According to Alhaji Abdullahi, if the state government could appoint an Igbo man commissioner, there is nothing preventing it from appointing a Hausa in a similar post as the Hausas are one of the early settlers in Lagos. "And we have to say this: the state government should give us our fair share; it should give us more than what we have been given. We deserve to be given the post of commissioner. If the governor could appoint an Igbo a commissioner, we believe a Hausa man or at least any body from the North should be appointed a commissioner in Lagos. If this done, all major ethnic groups in Lagos would have a sense of belonging." The chairman said though the Hausas are thankful to the state governor for appointing one of their own as the boss of the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), he said they would have been happier if given a commissioner as the Igbos. He said there are many northern professionals resident in Lagos who are qualified, so according to him, the excuse of lack of capable hands should not arise. Views: 342
