Political violence erupted in Sokoto yesterday as police and thugs belonging to a political party clashed.

The violence which began at about 4:30 pm between Maiduguri road and Kano road started when a PDP vehicle was attacked by thugs suspected to be DPP supporters.

At the Marina Police station one of the PDP vehicles was parked with all its glasses smashed while three PDP vehicles were also parked at the Gwiwa police station badly damaged. Again, three PDP vehicles were smashed and were taken to the police headquarters.

Speaking to Daily Trust on telephone, the PDP secretary in the state, Alhaji Aminu Bello Sokoto, said their vehicles were attacked by their opponents who believed they had already lost in the rescheduled re-run governorship election.

According to him, the PDP was law abiding and would not react violently but reported the matter to the police. He said about 20 of their vehicles had been attacked and damaged.

However, the house of the DPP gubernatorial candidate in the state, Alhaji Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi was reported to have been tear-gassed by the police, a situation the state commissioner of police Alhaji Shehu Usman Biu, described as untrue. According to him, when the PDP reported the attack on their vehicles his men swang into action and while on routine patrol they passed near the DPP candidate’s residence and on sighting the police, thugs around the house started throwing stones and other weapons at them.

	Mr. The PDP led government support thuggery in the state. Can you even imagine people smoking and selling indian-hemp beside the Governor's house.
