The Federal Government has finalized plans to boost the teaching and learning of mathematics and science education, the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Jerry Agada has said.
During the closing ceremony of the one-month in-service training organised for 100 teachers from Yobe State on "Effective teaching of mathematics and science in schools" at the National Mathematical Centre (NMC), Abuja, he said that the country had no choice than to encourage mathematics and science education if vision 2020 was to be achieved. Dr. Agada, who represented the Minister of Education, Dr. Igwe Aja-Nwachuku, said "education, particularly science education, will be given priority in an effort to achieve the seven-point agenda of the Federal Government. "The president has assured that education, especially science education would be given the needed boost in a determined effort not only to realise the seven-point agenda but also to achieve the Millennium Development Goals," he said. He also praised the efforts of the Yobe State government and urged other states in the country to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics and science subjects. The Director General of NMC, Prof. Sam Ale, said that the centre was working assiduously to introduce new mathematics teaching methodology to enhance the teaching and learning of the subject in the country. He also commended the Yobe State government for taking the initiative to retrain its mathematics and science teachers. He said retraining was necessary as there was need to improve their proficiency through in-service training. Views: 327
