AC backs Lagos govt. on council polls Print E-mail

The Action Congress (AC) in Lagos says it supports the state government’s decision not to dissolve the leadership of the various local government councils before the council polls.

The chairman of the party in the state, Chief Henry Ajomale, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos yesterday that dissolving the councils’ executive had nothing to do with the polls.

NAN recalls that some AC chairmanship aspirants had in March called for the dissolution of the current leadership of the councils.

The aspirants had argued that since most of the incumbent administrators were aspirants, their retention would not create a level-playing ground.

Ajomale said that, "the party is not in support of the call for dissolution".

He explained that there was a legal stipulation on resignation of political aspirants "who are in office".

"What the AC intends to do is to ask them to resign before the elections in accordance with the electoral laws of Lagos state," he said.

Ajomale said that being in office was not a guarantee that the incumbent administrators would win the parties’ primaries as they might not be the choice of party members.

He said that when the State Independent Electoral Commission releases its guidelines, the AC would issue a directive to intending aspirants holding public office to resign.

"It is not only the administrators who are chairmanship aspirants. There are also other office holders in various fields who will like to contest, but are still in office," he stated.

Ajomale, however, gave assurance that there would be a level-playing ground for all the aspirants in the party’s primaries.

"The only people we are giving special concession and encouragement are the few women who have signaled interest to contest," he added.

He said that the party would not collect fees for nomination forms from female aspirants and would encourage them after the primaries to win in their areas.
