A new Vice-Chancellor has been appointed for the Bukar Abba Ibrahim University in Damaturu, Yobe State. He is Professor Musa Alabi who until his appointment, was a Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Bayero University Kano (BUK).

A statement from the office of the Secretary to the State Government, Engineer Baba Goni Machina, said Alhaji Ibrahim Maude has also been approved as the Registrar of the institution.

The new Vice Chancellor takes over from the pioneer head of the institution, Professor Muhammed Nur Alkali, who left the university recently following the suspension of degree programmes by Governor Mamman Bello Ali "because of poor infrastructure to handle degree programmes in the university".

The new Vice Chancellor who spoke to journalists in Damaturu at the weekend, said he accepted the new offer in good faith and promised to reposition the university to start offering degree programmes by 2010.

He however maintained that with the exception of degree courses, other programmes including remedial in arts and sciences would continue, adding that IJMB has also been approved to be offered in the university.

The Vice Chancellor added that students who have completed their first year in degree programmes in Bukar Abba University have been transferred to the BUK, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria and Kano State University and have been registered into 200 level.

Professor Alabi said the IJMB was accredited following the arrival of resource persons to the university from the Institute of Education of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The VC stated that admitted students into the Basic Studies programme will be qualified

Mr
Thats a goog one coming from Yobe, am conversant with developments in the university and l feel 2010 is too late. Prof you can make it Oct 2009. Please introduce courses that will assist in development of Yobe state. Am aware that drought is a problem, emphasis on agric ulture (biotechnology) will not be a waste. But l wish you get funds to carry out this noble task.

A WELCOME DEVELOPMENT
The Governor of Yobe state deserves commendation for taking positive measures that would sustain the state university. Also, by appointing a first class engineer, Professor Musa Alabi the new VC shows that he cherishes merit. The university should now make arrangements to start degree programmes particularly in key areas of need rather than duplicating courses that are offered in nearby universities.
