The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) at the weekend in Zaria, criticised the composition of the Federal Government’s team negotiating with Nigerian university unions on salaries and other welfare packages.
According to the Chairman of SSANU, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) branch, Malam Mohammed Gimba Alfa, the government’s team, by all indications, would not be fair to all the unions in the negotiations as its membership is mainly drawn from a particular union. Alfa made the remarks after an executive branch meeting of the union at ABU. He added thus; "Over 95% of the members of the Federal Government’s team are members of a particular union because they are mainly professors from either the National Universities Commission (NUC) or from the country’s universities. Therefore, these members don’t know the problems of the other unions or are not appreciating them; as such, justice may not be done to all the unions in the negotiations." The SSANU chairman further explained that if the government wants to be fair to all, the members of its team should’ve been equally drawn from all the unions participating in the negotiations. "Our union, for example, is only represented in the Federal Government’s team by only one member, the Registrar of the University of Abuja. What can one person influence in a team of about 30 members? This is why on the 17th and 18th of this month, our national executives will assemble here in ABU to access the entire negotiation process and from there, we will take the next line of action," Alfa said.
