A member of the House of Representatives, Chief Ike Chinwo, has called on the Federal Government to encourage licensed private refineries to commence operations.

Chief Chinwo who is the deputy chairman of the Committee on Science and Technology, made the call yesterday in a statement issued in Abuja.

He also called on the government to ensure that the four existing refineries operate at full capacity and give the licensed private refineries some level of incentive to enable them commence business as a veritable avenue to check fuel crisis.

He said: "To meet local demands, there is the dire need to encourage the establishment of refineries."

According to him, this would also encourage employment generation, improve the livelihood of the citizenry and thus have a multiplier effect on the socio-economic state of the nation.

While condemning the continued importation of petroleum products in preference to local production, he said: "It is very clear that the major reason for the seemingly unending fuel crisis in Nigeria is the country’s import dependent on the supply of petroleum products."

He called on the Federal Government to consider the availability of petroleum products to meet local demands as a national emergency and security.
