The Federal Government has awarded N129m contract for the control of erosion in Sumaila Local Government Area of Kano State.

Erosion, occasioned by heavy flooding, has led to destruction of hundreds of houses in the area every year, while thousands of residents are also displaced with reported human casualty.

Announcing the decision of the Federal Government to further increase funding for erosion control in the area during the 2008 fiscal year, the deputy minority whip in the House of Representatives, Alhaji Sulaiman Abdulrahman Kawu said additional N250m would be released for the purpose.

He disclosed this while inspecting the ongoing N129m erosion control project in the community, adding that the project would enable communities in the area to reclaim their farms that were lost to flood.

The area he said, had been exposed to devastation due to rapid erosion.

He explained that the 2008 budget, unlike the previous years’, would be feasible and implementable, stressing that the Federal Government more than ever before, is now ready to implement budgets passed by the National Assembly.

While assuring the community of government’s continued support to control the devastating erosion, he said he was working with the state government to improve social infrastructures in the area.
