Yobe State government will soon begin the construction of boarding primary schools in each of the 17 local government areas of the state as part of efforts to provide basic education for school age children in the state.

The Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Sidi Yakubu Karasuwa, said the initiative was aimed at giving children 100 percent free education, adding that studies have shown that because of poverty, some parents only think of how to feed their children and therefore hardly think of sending them to school.

He said each of the boarding primary schools would admit not less than 700 pupils, adding that based on performance, the pupils that graduate from these schools would be sent to the N1.2 billion Yobe College in Mamudo which is under construction and is expected to be managed by expatriates.

Karasuwa said in order to provide the needed manpower for the primary schools, students in the state College of Education Gashua pursuing National Certificate of Education, (NCE) would be offered automatic teaching appointment as they complete their final year examination.

He said his ministry has evolved plans to reverse the deplorable condition of education in the state, adding that a target has already been set which would ensure accelerated development of the sector.

The target, according to him, is for at least 40 per cent of senior secondary school students who would be sitting for their final exams this year to pass the examination with not less than five credits, adding that by 2009, the target would be increased to 65 per cent.

The commissioner explained that government has already started the renovation of some selected secondary schools in the state and that special training of teachers in some subjects has since commenced.
