The Minister of State for Communications, Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki Nakande has disclosed that the federal government would soon set up a ministry to supervise Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in the country.
Alhaji Nakande, who made this known in Lagos last Friday at a stakeholders summit on Nigerian Content Development on the ICT sector organized by Association of Telecoms Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), said the government has realized that having a ministry to focus solely on ICT issues would make the country an ICT giant. According to the minister, the government has already set up a committee, which has been working seriously to see to the establishment of the ministry very soon. His words: "The administration of Alhaji Umar Musa Yar’adua is doing everything possible to make Nigeria an ICT giant. The government has proposed the setting up of ministry of ICT to solely supervise the sector. To this end, a committee has been set up to see to the establishment of the ministry. The ministry may be established as soon the committee finishes it work and as soon as the president sees the report." The minister said with establishment of the ICT ministry, clash of interest among the ministries supervising the sector would be eradicated adding that the ICT is the second most important sector in the country after the oil sector, said, the present administration would work closely with stakeholders on best to move the sector forward. He said FG would continue to accept any positive contribution made for the development of the ICT sector. He called on the stakeholders to develop local content in the sector in order for the country to become ICT producer and "stop being just consumer of ICT products." He said the government is working tirelessly to improve on the power sector so that the problems associated with power in the ICT sector could be solved. Views: 1646
