With the successful expansion and completion of its G-MAX mobile wireless technology deployment by Galaxy Wireless Communications Limited, Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja, has become the first city in Africa to have an Internet cloud based on the emerging mobile WiMAX 802.16e standard.

In a nutshell, it gives them the privilege of being able to carry the Internet wherever they go, and the real impact of this will become more evident by the end of the second quarter of 2008 when intercity roaming will be available with a total installed capacity in excess of 2 million planned to cover Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Kano, Kaduna, Delta, Imo and Cross River states."

According to the Chairman of the Board, Rear Admiral Allison Madueke "the Abuja rollout marked the first phase of our planned massive nationwide deployment of Nigeria’s first genuine broadband network aimed also at providing services in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano and Kaduna states with a projected capacity in excess of 1.3 million subscribers in the next 180 days."

One more step for democracy in Africa.
Thanks to efforts of companies like Galaxy Wireless Communications Limited, Nigeria and Africa indeed, has taken one more step in the right direction towards a Ubiquitous 24 hour, reliable communication services for Nigeria. I say kudos to the leadership, men and women of GWC Ltd. For those that rightfully raised the question of affordability for low-income people, I say be patient, Rome was not built in a day - I do totally salute the thoughts and concern for others. Congratulations GWC!

wait
Em...em...let's wait and see. I don't clap over anything in my country just like that. HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN AFFORD the service? I live in Sri Lanka...all villages have AFFORDABLE CDMA telephones that can be used for internet. I (and 4 more users can also simulteneously) enjoy 24-hour wireless broadband internet in my small apartment for less than 5000 naira per month. I don't jubilate yet, can the average nigerian afford the service???
