In continuation of the phased commissioning of its nationwide Optic Fibre Cable project, Globacom yesterday hooked on the Owerri-Onitsha route to the highly advanced transmission backbone.

The launch of the facility in Owerri is expected to lead to a marked improvement in telecommunication service delivery in the eastern part of the country as the Optic Fibre Cable is a highly reliable voice and data transmission medium. It is superior to the satellite and microwave transmission networks generally deployed by telecom operators as it eliminates problems caused by changes in weather conditions.

While a thunderstorm can render the microwave and satellite ineffective, the optic fibre is immune from such problems. It guarantees high speed, reliable data and voice connectivity and has a much faster transmission of data, voice and broadband internet and multimedia services.

The Chief Operating Officer of Glo Broad Access, Martins Olowonihi said the facility would benefit not only the network’s subscribers but telecom service users and business generally as it provides large bandwidth for offices and corporate organisations.

"Globacom will continue to empower our people, governments and businesses in line with our commitment to lead the change in the telecoms industry," Olowonihi stated.

Speaking at the launching ceremony in Owerri, Imo State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Chief Chuma Nnaji who represented Governor Ikedi Ohakim noted that the optic fibre project would help the state government in its e-government endeavour.

The commissioner lauded Globacom for pioneering fast development of telecommunication facility in the country.

"We need this kind of partnership as we are a business-oriented state. Globacom is providing Nigerians the capacity to catch up with the rest of the world. The world is now a global village and the only way for us is to improve our telecommunications and Glo is doing just that. Imo will provide you the enabling environment and will continue to partner you.
